Our Mission & Vision

MISSION We provide innovative services to help international students achieve their Canadian dreams.

  • partnering with one of the largest public school systems in Canada;
  • providing full, wrap-around care for students, both academically and socially;
  • supporting students’ daily lives, including their academic, social, housing and tutoring needs;
  • caring for the whole student by providing daily, hands-on assistance with academics, tutoring, IELTS, immigration, transportation, nutrition;
  • ensuring open, honest, transparent communication with students, parents and the school system;
  • advocating for students at school and in other aspects of their life where they may need support;
  • working as an expert team to capitalize on the expertise of experienced, Canadian educators who know both the Canadian and Chinese education systems;
  • managing the after-school life of students through full supervision of study and social time; and
  • creating pathways for students to be successful in the high school system in order to continue in high-quality, prestigious Canadian universities.

We are also committed to assisting Chinese schools to “internationalize”. Our management team includes highly experienced Canadian education officials who help Chinese partners to:

  • adapt Chinese curriculum to meet Canadian and international expectations;
  • train teachers, both in China and through teacher exchanges to Canada, in western pedagogy to help students be successful; and
  • fully prepare students in China for the Canadian experience, e.g. online partnering with Canadian students, summer learning programs, IELTS preparation, use of Canadian education resources.

Our Revolutionary Philosophy

As a leader in international education, CTC’s three guiding principles help international students achieve their Canadian dreams: Success, Safety and Smooth Transitions.

We value and deliver:

SUCCESS – We believe all students will succeed in Canada and will attend the post-secondary institution of their choice.

SAFETY – Our team of experienced Canadian and Chinese educators are involved in the full Canadian experience with students: academics, home life, social activities, tutorial services, nutrition, etc. This centralized support system helps eliminate distractions and sets students up for eventual success.

SMOOTH TRANSITIONS – CTC helps to ensure a seamless transition from high school in China to high school and post-secondary opportunities in Canada.  Educators individually design pathways for students, provide summer learning programs, offer cultural experiences to better understand Canadian life and a mixture of Chinese and Canadian food experiences, and provide one-on-one counselling services to help bridge the cultural gap.

The CTC Difference

WHO ARE WE?

CTC International, a company whose care and concern for Chinese international students is rivaled by no other, is led by its president and CEO:

Paul Liu, President - Paul is best described as a passionate educator.  He has a very strong understanding of the needs of international students and how to help them integrate into the Canadian school system.  Mr. Liu began CTC International with an understanding that the majority of international students in Canada face huge challenges unless they are provided with a full suite of services - and that's what the team at CTC does!  So after working for the Canadian government, Mr. Liu left his position to devote 100% of his time to helping international students realize their Canadian dream.  He does this by finding and sharing innovative ways to capitalize on the strengths of the Canadian education system and by eliminating risks such as social distractions.  Paul's commitment is to create a road map to ensure that each and every Chinese international student will succeed in Canada.  Mr. Liu is married with a daughter and a son in Canada.

Jan Courtin, CEO - Fully committed to excellence in education, Jan Courtin has a strong educational leadership background and an innovative and creative mindset.

As National Director of Student Programs at The Learning Partnership from 2015 to 2018, Jan was responsible for all Kindergarten to grade 12 student programs across Canada. Founded in 1992, The Learning Partnership is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting, promoting and advancing public education. During her tenure, Jan launched new, innovative programs and significantly increased student participation across Canada. New programs include Dragons’ Nest, an entrepreneurial program for secondary school students; Coding Quest and Coding Trek: coding programs for students in grades 1 to 6.  The coding programs engaged over 200,000 students from 2016 to 2018 and the organization received a federal grant of $1 million to increase the reach.

As Superintendent of Education with the Peel District School Board from 2010 to 2015, Jan supported twenty-one schools in Brampton. She was known for her hands-on approach, high standards, mediation and conflict resolution, coaching and mentoring her vice principals and principals and introducing innovative approaches to teaching that leveraged technology. Jan was Chair of the United Way and was actively and successfully engaged in fund-raising.

Jan holds a Master’s of Education; Bachelor of Arts; and Supervisory Officer’s Certificate. She has studied at Harvard University’s National Institute for Urban School Leaders and at the University of Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France.

Jan served as a Director with the Children’s Aid Society of Peel from 2012 to 2015. She is fluent in French and Spanish and is eager to learn Mandarin.

WHY CHOOSE CTC?

Parents in China have many difficult choices to make:

  • Where in the world should I send my son or daughter to learn English?
  • Why should we choose Canada?
  • Why is it important to choose CTC?

CTC is a company like no other.  Our care and concern for our students - your children - is like no other company you will find.  We care for all aspects of your child's life in Canada - academics, social, emotional.

Why Canada and why CTC?  Canada is rated as one of the safest and friendliest places in the world to live.  Our proximity to three of the  most prestigious educational institutions in the country make CTC the #1 partner to choose for international education.  We are next door to the University of Toronto - consistently rated among the top 10 universities in the world.  We are also very close to Sheridan College - renowned throughout North America for programs such as business studies and animation.  And to round out your son's/daughter's high school needs, we are a partner with the Peel District School Board, Canada's second largest school board and known throughout the country for innovative programs and highly trained and skilled staff who understand students' ESL needs.

CTC has designed an innovative and revolutionary program to ensure that Chinese international students have every opportunity to integrate into Canadian society and achieve academic success in preparation for admission to Canadian universities.  We design a pathway for students to help them gradually ease into the experience:

  1. April visit - During the student's Grade 2/9 year, they are invited to Canada to shadow a Canadian partner and experience school and social life for two weeks in April.
  2. Summer programs in July - Just prior to beginning their school year in Canada, students are provided with a summer program during the month of July where they have opportunities to interact with other international students while studying ESL.
  3. Summer programs in August - In order to prepare for the Canadian OSSLT (literacy test), students are provided with further intensive ESL programming to improve English language skills.
  4. Evening programs - Throughout their stay in Canada, during evening hours (6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.), students engage in evening study programs including tutorial services, cultural presentations, program enhancements, Q & A sessions and so much more!

WHICH CANADIAN SCHOOLS DO STUDENTS ATTEND?

CTC partners with a number of large Canadian school boards, including the Toronto District School Board and the Peel District School Board.  TDSB is Canada's largest public school board an d PDSB is the second-largest in the country.

CTC works in partnership with the Peel District School Board in order to place students in the following schools:

1. Clarkson Secondary School: http://schools.peelschools.org/sec/clarkson/Pages/default.aspx

2. Applewood Heights Secondary School: http://schools.peelschools.org/sec/applewoodheights/Pages/default.aspx

3. Rick Hansen Secondary School: http://schools.peelschools.org/sec/rickhansen/Pages/default.aspx

4. Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School: http://schools.peelschools.org/sec/haroldmbrathwaite/Pages/default.aspx

WHERE DO STUDENTS LIVE?

CTC International students live in safe, modern accommodations while attending school in Canada.  Unlike other programs where students live in homestay programs, CTC students live together in beautiful homes close to their school program.  Students share a bedroom and have access to quiet, supervised study time during evening hours and on weekends.  In addition, the focus of CTC student life is on immersion, both in academics and in the cultlural life of Mississauga and Toronto.  Learning how to be an active participant in school activities and  volunteering in the local community are an essential part of integrating  into Canadian society.  Regular meetings with students and home staff ensure a focus on student achievement and well-being, and students will have a chance to discuss any residential issues, come up with new ideas  for activities and suggest special events.  Access to home staff and special counsellors will teach students important skills such as: how to adapt to a new culture, how to make friends, resolving conflict, peer pressure, ways to  resist and stop bullying, healthy nutrition, time management, and  online safety.  Students learn these valuable skills through group discussions as well as evening and weekend activities.    CTC staff help our students to clearly recognize both what’s expected of them while at school in Mississauga and how they can get  the most out of their experiences.

WHAT DO STUDENTS DO ON WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS?

CTC offers students  the opportunity to participate in cultural, recreational, and sporting  events that are offered through their home school and in the community of Mississauga, as well as other destinations throughout Ontario such as Toronto and Niagara.  In addition, CTC students can participate in local activities such as sightseeing, skiing, shopping, attending NBA and other sporting events, swimming and more.  Student study time is supervised by responsible adults who are able to assist with academics and guide students in their quest to achieve to their highest potential.
